Design Notes: The Story Behind Our Bolivian Hammocks

Design Notes: The Story Behind Our Bolivian Hammocks

At Nomada, we’re always drawn to pieces that do more than just sit pretty. We believe meaningful hospitality design can be a thread that connects people, place, and purpose. The beautiful hammocks you’ll find swaying in the garden breeze at Hotel Ynez and River Lodge are no exception.

These are not just hammocks. They are hamacas atadas, the traditional bed of the Guarayo people, a group indigenous to the Bolivian Amazon. For generations, these hammocks have been handwoven in the village of Urubichá, deep in the tropical lowlands of Bolivia. In this remote community, the women who craft them are master artisans, keepers of techniques passed down through centuries.

Each hammock begins with hand-spun, colorfast cotton thread. From there, it’s a full month of meticulous work: weaving on horizontal looms, braiding intricate patterns, and finishing with ornate crocheted lace and tassels. The finished product is a beautiful hammock that is delicately detailed yet strong and supportive.

We selected these pieces not just for their beauty, but for their integrity—their ability to hold space, offer rest, and evoke wonder. After all, isn't that what travel is all about? Whether you're lounging poolside at River Lodge or tucked under the oaks at Hotel Ynez, these pieces invite you to slow down, sink in, and stay awhile.

And if you’re ready to take the magic home with you, we offer a curated selection of these artisan hammocks through Nomada Deco.
